Group wants Buhari to establish border control agency

A civil society group, National Coordinator of the Social Integrity Network, has said the task of monitoring the nation’s borders was beyond the capacity of the Nigeria Customs Service alone.
The National Coordinator of the group, Mallam Ibrahim Issa, therefore, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to establish a border control enforcement agency by issuing an Executive Order.
This, he said, would boost the fight against insurgency, human trafficking and smuggling and also promote economic activities.
The group said, “It is obvious that leaving border monitoring in the purview of the Nigeria Customs Service alone cannot serve the overall interest of Nigerians because events have shown that Customs are only after revenue generation with no attention to securing the nation.
“The jobs of revenue generation, border security mechanism, human trafficking control, anti-smuggling policy enforcement and regulation of migrants are beyond Customs operational technique alone; therefore, there is an urgent need for the emergence of an effective agency before the reopening of borders.”
